MESSAGE FROM MARIKA Early summer is a time of celebration. Everyone seems to be out enjoying the warm weather and extended daylight hours. Why not take advantage of this extra-social season by finding opportunities to network? Networking doesn't have to be a chore -- in fact, if you approach it the right way, you might even find yourself enjoying it! |

Cultivating new relationships and fostering existing ones is a non-negotiable must during in-between times in your career. Unfortunately, many of my clients report back to me that networking conversations seem superficial and self-serving, and attending networking events feels like an overall waste of time. If you already have a business card and can explain what it is that you do in simple, clear language -- but you still aren't seeing any results from networking -- here are some things to consider for the next time: Shhhh! The secret to networking: Give some thought to the kinds of events that you are attending. Does the event truly interest you? Do you agree with the message or mission statement of the organization that's hosting it? Overall, do you feel that you want to be associated with the members of the group? These are all questions that you should be asking yourself when deciding whether or not to join a particular association. In the case of networking, the rule of attraction applies. You'll have a much better chance at making positive, profitable connections if you align yourself with a group that shares your values. Focus on quality, not quantity. Speed networking is not the goal. Meeting as many people as possible in a very short time is unlikely to yield a positive outcome. Instead, networking should be about making one meaningful connection at a time. When engaged in conversation, truly listen to what the other person is saying. Give them the gift of your undivided attention. One genuine conversation has a much more far-reaching effect than passing out a handful of business cards -- and one valuable connection can make all the difference in your career. Be creative about how and where you meet people. Not all networking opportunities look like networking opportunities. Yes, you can find events for the entertainment professional in Los Angeles at almost any hour of the day or night, but other potentially lucrative options may be hiding in plain site. Do you regularly attend sporting events, play poker, take dance or yoga classes or play video games? Not only is it good for your soul to have interests other than work, but it's also possible that your passions could lead you to people who share your career goals. When you're living your most authentic life, all the different pieces start to connect. Be patient and give it time. Remember, the strongest relationships take time to develop. Trust, friendship, and respect are all necessary ingredients for a great associate, advocate or friend -- but they rarely happen overnight. Accept that healthy relationships grow slowly and mature gradually, and you will be much less likely to encounter feelings of frustration or to have unfair expectations when meeting new people.
