Three common "Don'ts" that all job seekers should avoid:
Almost on a daily
basis, I coach clients that are literally exhausted by the
process of looking for a new job. There are a few pitfalls that I see
clients fall into over and over that drain the life out of the search
for work, leaving less energy for more effective techniques. Avoiding
these all-too-common mistakes can not only prevent fatigue, but also
allow more time for "working smarter, not harder," bringing you closer
to those reached-for goals that will propel you farther down the road
toward your ideal career.
Three common "Don'ts" that all job seekers should avoid:
Don't spend all of your time looking online.
This is a big one. In this era of rapid-fire communication, looking
online for your next opportunity can seem like the most obvious place
to start. Sure, spending time searching online job boards and sending
out resumes over the Internet may feel like a good way to make progress
in your job search, but my coaching experience shows that the success
rate for finding a position that way is actually quite low. Especially
in the entertainment industry, where it is often a matter of "who you
know," applying for jobs online is often an ineffective way to expend
your energy. Put yourself in an interviewer's position -- would you
rather comb through piles of faceless resumes, or meet a candidate who
comes highly recommended?
Try
to be more creative when looking for your next position. Social
networking can be as simple as attending a friend's dinner party or
going to a screening of a few award-winning short films. The first and
most important step is to just get out there and meet people. Don't keep looking for "just anything."
The great thing about the entertainment industry is that there is not
just one clear and definite path toward success. That being said, it's
up to you, the job seeker, to be specific about what you're looking for
so that the message can be easily transmitted to people that may need
your services. If you're seeking an entry-level position, do the
research so that you know what kinds of jobs are available for a person
with the level of experience you have. If you're hoping to transition
from one position to another, have a clear idea of the job you want so
that you can articulate it to people that may be able to help. If
you're unhappy in your current job or searching for other prospects,
its up to you to look for the right fit for your skills, abilities and
temperament. The idea is to decide what you want and then to be
specific, planting the seeds so that when someone in your network hears
of an opening, they immediately think of you. Don't just go through the motions. It can never be stated enough: looking for a job is a job -- and often a full-time job at that. If your energy is low, people will pick up on that and all of your efforts could be wasted. As
challenging as it may seem, remembering to take care of yourself during
this transitional time is as important as all of the other efforts you
make. If you feel yourself loosing steam in your search for the
next great opportunity, find ways to recharge your batteries. What do
you love to do? What brings you joy? What relaxes you? Look for ways
that you can keep your spirit and morale up so that your search remains
successful. Remember, one positive encounter can change the course of
your entire career.
